Mar 30 2011 - 16:36 Statement regarding Seizure of pinky.ratman.org shell server. pinky.ratman.org is a Linux shell server for security researchers, technology enthusiasts and like-minded friends. The community centered around pinky is 300+; about half are regular users. The following statement was released by Andrew Strutt, a co-owner and administrator. Today I was contacted by the FBI and informed as a courtesy that I am now able to notify my users of this legal process. Until this point, I was not able to share any details of nor acknowledge the existence of this legal process, and for this I am deeply regretful. I am writing this statement to notify users that I was served with sealed legal process documents from the FBI in late December concerning the activities of a particular user whose identity I am not aware of. I was informed by the FBI that I would be given a list of what was looked at. I have not received this yet, nor been able to verify. I was unable to speak out on the circumstances earlier due to the nature of this legal process until today, nor did I have the resources to obtain legal representation. The Electronic Frontier Foundation turned down appeals for help. The lack of support left me feeling isolated after years of supporting the organization. pinky was moved to a virtual host provider in late August of 2010. The legal process was for the old machine that housed pinky for 5+ years before it was moved. brain.ratman.org was not seized. irc.2600.net.s infrastructure was not seized. Nevertheless, I suggest that all users change their passwords and update their SSH keys. It has been personally and professionally very trying dealing with this. I thank the community and all my friends for their support. I cannot be available for further comment. The FBI or Department of Justice should be contacted for more queries.
